TL#128    "Vintage Union - Two For The Money"
Entered by:
Linda Thielfoldt
The Quilted Goose
Troy, MI
Dimensions: 65" X 79"
Batting: Hobbs Polydown, Quilters Dream Select
Thread:  Superior - Bottom Line
Quilters Statement:  I started making these Union Blocks several years ago drawing from my vast stash of reproduction fabrics.  I had no real plan for the layout or the quilt, I just knew I like the block.  While on a ski trip I found the border fabric and that prompted me to complete the quilt.  The feather quilting designs are my own and I quilted it with Superior Bottom Line Thread in top and bobbin.  Two Layers of batting help give the quilting more definition.  Hobbs PolyDown and Quilter's Dream Select Cotton.  Even though I love all the fabrics, the reverse side is my favorite, two quilts for the price of one!

Entered by:
Myrna Avila
Mount Shasta, CA
Dimensions: 53 1/2" X 58"
Batting: Hobbs 100% Cotton
Thread:  Sulky
Quilters Statement:  This Quilt was inspired by my mother.  When I was young we would pick up leaves in autumn and preserve them by pressing them between wax paper.  Now I use leaves in painting and dyeing my own fabrics.  The flora in this quilt came from the woods in my yard at the base of Mount Shasta.  The machine quilting is done on my home Bernina to embellish the sun dyed natural images.

Woodinville, WA
Dimensions: 21" X 28 1/2"
Batting: Cotton
Thread:  Superior - Rainbows, Sulky Rayon, C-Lon Beading Thread
Quilters Statement:  Most of my life has been spent within driving distance of the ocean, or some kind of waterway, so I wanted to portray it so that the viewer would really feel as if he or she was looking out at the ocean.  Of course it is better to be out on the ocean when it is calm, but more interesting to look at the waves, and see the strength they have.

WC#401    "Aphrodite's Despair"
Entered by:
Sue McCarty
Sue's Machine Quilting
Roy, UT
Dimensions: 77" X 83"
Batting: Linda's Choice, Tuscany Silk
Thread:  YLI Metallic, Bottom Line, So Fine, Monrox Metalic
Quilters Statement:  Inspired by my sister-in-law's Mediterranean homeland of Cyprus, This quilt depicts the goddess Aphrodite's despair after a wild boar killed her lover Adonis.  All of the motifs on the temple relate to the goddess's mythology or actual Greek architecture.  Because Cyprus is an island, I used pebble quilting to represent the shore and feathers to give the feel of waves.  The shields on the beach are reminders of the Trojan War which, according to myth, was the result of the aid Aphrodite gave Paris in the seduction of Helen.  The quilt top was designed on cotton sateen fabric.  The backing is from Moda's Shimmer collection.  The two layers of batting are Linda's Choice and Tuscany Silk.  The threads used include, Bottom Line, All-Brands metallic, So Fine, and YLI metallic.  Swarovski crystals are from Cheri's Crystals.

Troy, MI
Dimensions: Garment
Batting: Tuscany Silk
Thread:  Superior - Bottom Line
Quilters Statement:  Jacket, McCall's discontinued, Skirt, See & Sew 4000, Purse, my own design.  The embroidery was my inspiration for this ensemble.  I love the teal and gold colors together and it was heavenly working with the silk fabric.  I patterned the floral and paisley quilting motif after the embroidery motifs for continuity and I think the cross hatching adds visual interest.

Entered by:
Birgit Schueller
Creative Bits
Riegelsberg, Germany
Dimensions: Garment
Batting: Hobbs 100% Cotton
Thread:  Embrofil Machine embroidery Thread y Embrofil
Quilters Statement:  This long evening dress is the first ever I made.  As my husband and I love to dance and as I absolutely couldn't find a ready-made dress to wear at that upcoming ball,  Gingko Fantasy was created in early 2008.  I chose crinkled purple artificial silk for my dress which has proven to be the perfect fabric for a garment that is packed and unpacked a lot while traveling from quilt show to quilt show.  The bodice and the skirt's hem are heavily quilted with stylized gingko leaves in circles of various sizes.  About 5, 500 Swarovski hot fix crystals have been used to embellish the circle lines throughout the dress.  This outfit was completed by elegant long fingerless gloves that have been quilted and embellished to fit the dress.  Unfortunately, these gloves have gone astray while being shipped between shows.  The problem is that due to my dress having been traveling the USA for more than a year now, that to date I never have had the chance to wear it at a dance.
