HF#1211    "Among Comrades"
Entered by:
Ellen Munnich
Temple, TX
Dimensions: 93" X 93"
Batting: Quilter's Dream Black Poly
Thread:  Marathon-Double stand of Gold Metallic
Quilters Statement:  The Story - Paul Bahne Munnich served 34 years in the Illinois Army National Guard, most of it full time.  While he never saw combat (he always wished he could go), he served his country well.  Like many Guardsmen of the 1950's thru 1980's, his unit responded to nearly every disaster call in the state.  They dealt with tornado's, flood, and other natural disaster.  In particular, I remember him being away for long times sandbagging levees where rivers were over flowing their banks.  Like so many other rescuers, many of them were injured, and even a few were killed in the line of duty.  Sometimes they were gone for weeks on sites where their own neighbors were suffering great losses.  They were the first one there giving blankets, food, medical aid and comfort - long before the Red Cross mobilized and arrived.  This quilt is also a salute to all the brave men and women in the National Guard who serve not only at home, but abroad.  To hold them in less regard than any of our other brave soldiers is folly, for they serve among the best - AMONG COMRADES.  In addition to the adaptations of the seals, there are 50 stars and 13 eagles (the 13th is on the label) on this quilt.  Quilting was done on a Gammill Optimum with Machine Quilting Robot, and the layout was done using Pro-Q Designer.  The digitizing of the designs took over 4 weeks.  The quilt was first basted in 1 1/2" diamonds using Superior's Vanish Extra before placing the designs.

HF#1214    "Treasures Of The Quilting Trail"
Entered by:
Jennifer Reinhart
I'm Sew Happy Quilting
Newport, OR
Dimensions: 45" X 68"
Batting: Hobbs 80/20
Thread:  Perma Core
Quilters Statement:  I made this quilt to commemorate Oregon's 150th Birthday.  The wagon image is a  one-of-a-kind design!  I love how the wagon seems to come from behind Mt. Hood on the Oregon Trail and almost right off the quilt.  The thread was not enough for the words so I used a Coptic Pen.  Designs and digitizing help by Kim Diamond, Mother Janice, Dawn Cheetham, Anne Bright, Deb Geissler & the Statler Siblings.

HF#1210    "Floral Elegance"
Entered by:
Louise Moon
Berrien Springs, MI
Dimensions: 92" X 94"
Batting: Pellon Fusible and Quilter's Dream Cotton Select
Thread:  So Fine, White, Various Embroidery threads including Yenmet metallic
Quilters Statement:  A passion for embroidery was the starting point for this quilt.  I made it for my daughter, Cami Cress.  Once I finished piecing, Cami's question: How are you going to quilt it led to our venture into longarm quilting.  A class from Judy Nowicki got us started with the embroideries which Judy designed.  The quilt is named after her design set, " Floral Elegance".  Cami and I made lots of color changes to Judy's designs.  Our center medallion used an array of half a heart from the corner design and frame pieces from other blocks.  Quilting was needed, I thought, to help tame a bubbly texture in the finished blocks caused by fusible batting  that was used with the embroideries.  My original plan to stipple overall changed as Creative Studio version 1 software for our Statler Stitcher gave us more options.  I decided to frame certain areas and then stipple within the frames.  I digitized all designs used in this quilt, often using design elements from the embroidery.
